Tamil separatist rebels in Sri Lanka have declared a one-month unilateral ceasefire from midnight on Christmas eve. The move comes two weeks after the election of a new government pledged to re-opening peace talks with the guerrillas, and ahead of a visit to India by the new prime minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, with regard to restarting the peace process. The Tamil Tigers said they'd consider extending what they termed their goodwill gesture if the armed forces observe a ceasefire and an economic embargo on rebel held territory is ended.

A similar truce last Christmas lasted for four months before a Norwegian-sponsored peace process broke down.
